Hello--This is the first email to begin discussion on the RHIC spin plan, due Jan. 31, 2005. We have had a plan (or outline) that we have used for the experiment beam use proposals, beginning with 200 GeV and lower luminosity probes, moving to direct photon measurements at 200 GeV, and then to 500 GeV and W production and smaller x direct photon measurements. There are many issues that need to be addressed that we are all aware of, including figure of merit goals, expected machine performance, running time, needed detector improvements, transverse spin goals. My thought is to approach this by first collecting a list of issues that need to be discussed and resolved, and then discuss them, developing assignments as needed. An initial list is attached. Please think about what we should flag as issues, add, subtract, whatever, and send your comments to the committee. I would then propose to place the list on the spin discussion page for comment. At the same time, we should develop an outline for the plan document, with responsibility assigned for each section. (My thought here is that the committee members would take responsibility for sections, and may act as organizer and editor for the section. We would encourage participation.) An outline is attached (without names yet!). Please also think about this outline and make suggestions, criticisms, whatever. Finally, we should have a schedule for creating and completing the document. We should discuss a schedule at our telephone meeting. I hope we can have a list of issues, an outline for the document, and a schedule, for the Dec. 6 spin collaboration meeting, which will have already been distributed to the collaboration for discussion.
